Nu Metal (pronounced "new metal") is a sub-genra of Metal that blends Metal with other styles. It ussually uses elements from Grunge music. Nu Metal that was created in 1993 by a band called Korn. Their demo-tape, Neidermeyer's Mind laid a foundation for other Nu Metal bands. Later came bands like Slipknot and Hed Pe, that perfected the sound of the sub-genre. In 1998, Korn took Nu Metal into the mainstream with their third album, Follow the Leader.

Many of today's Nu Metal bands are from California, where it initially started. However, many of the mainstream bands are not. Some of them are Des Moines's Slipknot, Atlanta's Sevendust, Jacksonville's Limp Bizkit, and Chicago's Disturbed. P.O.D, Disturbed, and Slipknot are two of the few bands that are still mainstream (Mainly Disturbed). They constantly appear on radio stations and TV stations such as MTV. Slipknot and Disturbed have one of the largest fan bases in all of Metal.
