Heavy Metal, commonly reffered to simply as Metal, is a genre of rock and roll that started to develop in England and America in the late 60s and early 70s. It originates and uses many elements from blues and classical music. Eventually, it broke into the mainstream with bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Metallica. Metal reached the peak of its popularity in the late 80s. It was played on most radio stations, and was all over TV stations. However, Metal has become less popular and is rarley played on the mainstream media. Many Heavy Metal songs contain somewhat controversial lyrics. This one of the reasons that most Metal bands never reach the mainstream.

Some of the best known Metal bands today are Cannibal Corpse, Metalica, System of a Down, Slipknot, and many others. Most modern Metal bands use fast, powerfull brumming and distorted guitars, and load vocals. There are many sub-genres of metal, such as Death Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Nu Metal, and Black Metal.
