Death Metal is an "extreme" sub-genra of Metal. Death Metal usually uses low "growling" vocals with fast guitars and drums. It also ussually contains multiple tempo changes and guitar solos. Usually, Death Metal songs contain very violent lyrics. Death Metal develoiped in the mid 1980s.

It was first developed by a band called "Death". Their lead singer, Chuck Schuldiner is often reffered to as "the father of Death Metal. With fast paced tempo and "growling" they took Metal to a darker, more brutal-sounding era. They called it Death Meatal, and it soon cought on. After them came bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Canibal Corpse, Amon Amarth and Nile. These and many other bands made Death Metal what it is today.
